Science Journalism: Dead or Evolving?

Posted in University Research by mcarter on September 22nd, 2009

Journalism is dead, or so they say.

(Actually, it’s only trading in its ’49 Studebaker for a Ferrari, but that’s another blog for another time.)

As newspapers search for ways to stay afloat, science writers often are among the first “non-essentials” to go. In the absence of such science journalism, universities have begun generating their own research news, even joining forces to establish their own science “wire service.”

Should we miss the science-beat writers? Do they play a role in holding researchers accountable? Is science journalism missing a key ingredient — skepticism?
