As newspapers search for ways to stay afloat, science writers often are among the first “non-essentials” to go. In the absence of such science journalism, universities have begun generating their own research news, even joining forces to establish their own science “wire service.”
Should we miss the science-beat writers? Do they play a role in holding researchers accountable? Is science journalism missing a key ingredient — skepticism?
