The INOV8 blog tracks the latest news and trends in technology and innovation throughout the world
The meaning of things. Something very easy to take for granted.
For instance, not long ago we thought we knew the definition of spotting the football. That is, to place the ball at the point it had been advanced when the ball carrier was ruled down or out of bounds.
Simple enough, right? Apparently not. After this past weekend’s round of NFL wildcard games, and after another head-scratching year of SEC football, INOV8 must finally concede that it doesn’t know the definition of spotting the ball. Silly us.
Which leads us to terms and their meanings. We tend to assume things about our definitions, confining them to distinct parameters (which one would presume to be a good thing when it comes to spots) — an entrepreneur is this and not that. But that’s tough to do with a term like Innovation.
Blogging Innovation considers entrepreneurs, inventors and innovation, and what defines each. Here’s a look:
We need inventors to create new products and new processes, and we need entrepreneurs to disrupt existing markets and bring these new products and services to the market. We also need innovation from large existing firms, because without innovation they stagnate and die. When we talk about innovation, invention and entrepreneurs, and when we put policies in place to encourage certain types of activities or investments, we need to understand the implications and ramifications of those words and actions.
