INOV8 Notes: APEI, Gone in 60, New Startup Launch

Posted in Innovate Arkansas Clients, entrepreneurs, events by mcarter on February 21st, 2012

Some news and notes from around the Arkansas startup community on this beautiful Fat Tuesday:

APEI, the IA client and University of Arkansas startup, is a finalist in the 2012 Arkansas Business of the Year award presented by Arkansas Business. It’s featured in this week’s issue, online here.

APEI hopes to bring back to Arkansas all the electrical engineers who had to leave home to find work. And it’s well on its way. From the article by Luke Jones:

The development of APEI is important: It gives highly trained engineers a reason to stay in Arkansas.

“We’re in an area that is very new and emerging,” Hornberger said. “We’re actually one of the leaders in what we do in the world. We’re growing pretty rapidly, becoming key players in the field of high-performance power electronics systems.”

Before he graduated from UA, Hornberger had no inkling that he would be able to use his talents so close to home.

“A lot of graduates from UA went off,” he said. “There weren’t any jobs here; it was an East Coast-West Coast type of deal. Now we’re recruiting them to come back.”

Be sure and pull for APEI tonight at the ABOY awards.

The latest installment of the popular Gone in 60 Seconds elevator pitch contest, the brainchild of IA advisor Jeff Amerine, is set for Feb. 27 in Fort Smith.

Check here for registration info (and HURRY if you’re interested in making a pitch). Even if you don’t participate, Gone in 60 is a great spectator event. It goes down this coming Monday beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Second Street Live.

Local entrepreneur Matt Price and pals launched a new venture this week, Bourbon and Boots. It’s all about great Southern living, folks.

B&B is “comprised of a bunch of southerners and one yankee” who take pride in providing interesting Southern stuff…stories, art, food. Good stuff. Check it out.
